I have always been impressed by Takapuna Beach Cafe. Not only is the location fabulous overlooking Takapuna beach but it is an extremely well run slick operation. Is is a very popular spot with both locals and overseas visitors so there is usually a bit of a wait for a table – they manage their long queues with electronic paging devices and the efficient service ensures a quick turn around of tables.
This is one of my favourite spots for weekend brunch as I am a huge fan of their lattes and pancakes – their old menu had the most delicious lemon infused pancakes which I was sad to see go but must admit the current buttermilk ones are equally good. Interestingly they also have an offal section on their menu offering lambs tongue, chicken livers, black pudding and devilled kidneys -while these are not my cup of tea thyey seem to be quite popular. It is however the ice cream that is this cafes claim to fame. They literally cleaned out the prizes at New Zealand Ice Cream Awards with the Salted Caramel Gelato winning the Supreme Award for a Boutique Manufacturer as well as winning the sorbet category with their NZ Passion fruit Sorbet (my personal favourite!), the Premium Vanilla category and the Premium category with their Dark Chocolate.
Their handmade Gelato is just superb and there is always an extensive range on sale to cater for all tastes from the usual flavors like chocolate and vanilla to an interesting selection with a distinct New Zealand flavour.
What better way to enjoy walk along one of Aucklands best beaches than with an ice cream from Takapuna Beach Cafe to eat along the way.
