Hidden in the backstreets of Newmarket, with no website, one could say that Heart of Flavour was Newmarket’s best kept secret …except for the fact that everyone is raving about it. And for good reason – the cakes are undoubtedly the best I have sampled in New Zealand.
I was devastated when their old shop under the Newmarket viaduct was closed – every birthday became a disappointment – according to my family no cake I bought or made could match Heart of Flavours and the day would inevitably end up with everyone reminiscing about their chocolate mousse cakes. Needless to say I have been a regular customer since they reopened in their new premises at 4 Roxburgh Street.
I only recently discovered that the master behind it all is a French Chef , Frederick, from Montreal…actually he is more than a chef, he is a culinary wizard. Everything he makes is just superb, so much so that I cant pick a favorite… the Raspberry and White Chocolate Cheesecake, Chocolate Mousse Cake and Lemon Tart are probably my top 3. There is also a great range of chocolates, macaroons, biscuits and frozen treats and they make awesome christmas hampers ….but its the cakes that keep me coming back.
